Bobotie – like meatloaf on steroids


BOBOTIE

A sweat flavourful meat dish from South Africa
 

  • 2 lb Ground Beef
  • 2 Onions
  • 1 thick slice Bread
  • ⅓ cup Milk + ½ cup Milk
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Curry Powder
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 2 t Salt
  • 2 t Turmeric
  • Juice from 1 Lemon
  • Slivers from about 6 Almonds
  • ½ cup Raisins
  • 4 Bay Leaves or Lemon Tree Leaves or the Zest from one Lemon
  • ½ cup Chutney or Apricot Preserve
  1. Slice the onions and fry in a little oil.
  2. Take out of the pan and fry the ground beef.
  3. Crumb the bread and get it wet with the ⅓ cup Milk.
  4. Mix all the ingredients except the leaves, one egg and the ½ cup milk.
  5. Put in a greased glass baking dish so that it is about two inches thick.
  6. Stick the leaves into the mixture or sprinkle the zest on top.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes at 350°F.
  8. Beat the egg and ½ cup Milk and pour over the meat.
  9. Bake for a further  30 minutes at 350°F.
  10. Serve with rice, a sweet chutney and freshly sliced bananas.  [You can slice the bananas and serve them in a little milk to prevent them from going black and nasty.]
